Obituary of Maxine Mae Elliott Bailey

Maxine Mae Elliott (Daisy) Bailey (1924-2018)

Maxine Mae Elliott (Daisy) Bailey was born December 8, 1924 in Ogden, Utah to Maxwell Edward Elliott and Josephine Royle. She attended elementary school in Ogden and graduated from Ogden High School.  She attended college at Utah State College in Logan, Utah before marrying Carl Hyrum Bailey on November 16, 1944.

Carl and Daisy lived in North Ogden and Ogden, Utah; El Paso, Texas; and Denver, Colorado before moving to Boise, Idaho in 1960.  Boise has been her home for the past 58 years.  During the early years of her marriage, Carl began calling her Daisy and introducing her to friends and associates as Daisy and as Maxine.  To avoid confusion, he finally settled on Daisy and she has been known by that name ever since.  The name “Daisy” is derived from the old comic strip, Li’l Abner, written and drawn by Al Capp.  One of the characters was Daisy Mae Scruggs.  It was from this character that Carl came up with the nickname “Daisy” and bestowed the moniker on Maxine.

Daisy was an active person.  At age 93, she participated in a number of bridge groups.  Each week she drove to Crane Creek Country Club to play bridge with friends.  She participated in civic and volunteer affairs and was active for years with the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra and the Assistance League of Boise.  She liked golf both as a participant and as a spectator. She liked to travel.  She loved entertaining and hosting super bowl parties and after-golf parties in her home.  In her later years, bridge became her passion, playing in several bridge clubs and bridge marathons.  She was interested in politics and community affairs and loved her nightly Fox News Network programs.  She loved the yearly week at the Polly Bemis Ranch on the Salmon River with the family and the one-on-one week with each grandchild every summer.  Mostly, she liked to interact with family, friends and neighbors.  She loved, was loved and will be missed.

Daisy was preceded in death by her husband Carl, her parents and by her brother Jerry Elliott.

Daisy is survived by Terry Lyn Bailey Gooch, her son-in-law, Neal T. Gooch; her three grandchildren, Steven N. Gooch (Lauren) of Bountiful, Utah; Daniel C. Gooch (Jennifer) of McKinney, Texas; Carrie Lyn Morrill (Heston) of West Haven, Utah and her eight great grandchildren (Cooper, Baylee, Brogan, Treyden, Tessa, Harper, Ridleigh, and Griffin); and her brother, Royal Max Elliott of Salt Lake City, Utah.

A memorial service will be held August 11, 2018 at 10:30 am at Summers Funeral Homes, 1205 W Bannock St, Boise, ID 83702.  Daisy will be interred alongside her husband, Carl at the Idaho Veterans Cemetery.
