I just wanted to express how grateful I am to have worked so closely with Vern the past 23 years. Professionally, I have never been around a more consistently ethical and professional person as Vern. He loved his work and his family. You knew he loved his work because he was never out of the office for more than a few days at a time. I knew he loved his family because other than college football, it was the only thing he would talk about that was not work related. He loved Kathie, Steve and Stephanie and really enjoyed telling me what his 4 grandsons were up to.
Vern taught me so much in those 23 years. I was only 29 when we started working together and he showed me how to properly lead a meeting, treat employees, do what was best for the organization, and do the right thing even when no one was looking. Having Vern as a business partner for nearly 17 years has been a great experience. While not as financially rewarding as previous employment, it was rewarding to see our clients lives change and improve. As an added bonus, we never had to travel to Nashville or have any budget meetings with corporate VP's anymore, so that was definitely worth something. We nearly always were in agreement on every issue that came up. I could not have asked for a better business partner.
The memory I have of Vern from when we worked at the hospital together that will always stick with me is a time we were traveling to some meeting together. I had worked at the hospital a few years and was the CFO at the time. I remember asking Vern, "when do you plan on retiring?" His response was, "oh in about 5 years or so." A couple years later I remember someone else asking him the same question with him giving the same response. I knew at that time Vern would retire only when he could not come in to work anymore. He loved his family and his work. It just doesn't get better than that. I will miss my partner, mentor and friend.

I first met Vern when he was at Intermountain Hospital. It was my privilege to work with him as officers of the substance abuse providers association, AACT. He was a remarkably intelligent, wise, and gentle man. I pray that Heavenly Father's Spirit will comfort his family, friends, and associates while you grieve.

Dear Kathie, We were so sorry to read of Vern’s death. We so enjoyed being newcomers to Boise and being homeowners in a brand new subdivision with you. You guys and Jake (and the other doggy whose name escapes me) were wonderful neighbors and I’m sure your neighbors will miss Vern as much as we missed you when we moved. We are honored to have known such a good man who did such important work and to have known you who advocated so fiercely for the mental health cause. Sincerely, Linda and Jim McConnell, Portland, OR
