Obituary of Maria T. Aseguinolaza

Mari or Maria to some, Teodora to others, and Yaya to her beloved grandchildren, Maria Teodora Beltran de Heredia Beovide was born to Joaquin and Ildefonsa in Salvatierra, Alava (Spain). She was the second of four siblings. As a young woman she was an excellent student, and artist, who completed more than the usual education for that time period, staying on as an assistant to the famed Micaela Portilla (later known as the mother of Alava). Mari tended her parent’s store, and learned to be a dressmaker. In addition, she was active in a group that traveled into rural towns to vaccinate and educate. In those younger years, she traveled to various parts of Spain and had many adventures with dear childhood friends. She cherished those beautiful memories and often shared the incredible pictures. Later, she would become the first woman city council member in Salvatierra.

In 1969, she married Martin Aseguinolaza and after the birth of their two sons Ramon and Luis, she moved to America where Martin had gone ahead of her and purchased a farm in Meridian. She often recalled how she spoke no English and boarded the plane with a simple list of helpful words. The following year, in 1974, their daughter Helena was born. Teodora was widowed in 1979 when Martin died of a heart attack. To the surprise of many she remained in Idaho following Martin’s wishes to raise their children in America. Her devotion to her husband was evident in many ways, including the fact that she never had any interest in remarrying.

In earlier years, she cleaned the Idaho State Bank in Kuna while still working their small sheep farm, gardening, and canning to feed her children. She never forgot the support she received from friends and family during those difficult years. Maria started sewing and spent many years working at Brookover’s and New Generation. She was known for her beautiful flower gardens and was an incredible cook. She was incredibly tough, resourceful, and hardworking, yet had a humorous side too.

Yaya finally became a grandmother at the age of 71. Before they started school, she cared for all three of her grandchildren and they never spent a minute in daycare. She taught them many things, including Spanish. The love she had for them abounded and they held the highest respect and affection for their Yaya. She was able to live the remainder of her days on the farm, enjoying weekly Saturday family dinners and MUS card games; winning the last two games the Saturday before she died at home unexpectedly, surrounded by her loving family.

Teodora was preceded in death by her husband, Martin, their son Ramon, and her brother Eusebio. She is survived by her son Luis Aseguinolaza, daughter Maria Helena Aseguinolaza, son (in-law) Max Aaron Delgado, and grandchildren Max, Amelia, and Micaela Delgado. She is also survived by her sisters Milagros and Ignacia Beltran de Heredia Beovide and more family in Spain. Friends are invited to her funeral on Monday, April 5th at Holy Apostles Catholic Church: a 10:00 Rosary and viewing followed by Mass at 11:00 and burial at the Meridian Cemetery.

Maria Teodora Aseguinolaza

Mary o Maria a algunos, Teodora a otros, y Yaya a sus queridos nietos, Maria Teodora Beltrán de Heredia Beovide, hija de Joaquín y Ildefonsa, nació en Salvatierra, Alava (España) el día 1 de abril de 1931. La segunda de cuatro hermanos, de joven fue una estudiante y artista excelente, estudiando más de lo normal para esa época; quedándose un año adicional como asistente a la famosa Micaela Portilla (más tarde conocida como la madre de Alava.) Mary trabajó en la tienda de sus padres, y después estudió corte y confección. También fue activa en un grupo que vacunaba y educaba en los pueblos. En su juventud viajó a diferentes partes de España y paso muchas vacaciones con sus queridas amigas. Como se recordaba de esa época y a menudo compartía las fotos. Más tarde, fue la primera (mujer) concejala en Salvatierra.

En 1969, se casó con Martin Aseguinolaza y después de nacer sus hijos Ramon y Luis, se mudó a América donde Martín les esperaba y ya había comprado una granja en Meridian. A menudo se acordaba de cómo fue en el avión sin hablar inglés con una lista de palabras útiles.  Un año después, en 1974, nació su hija Helena. Teodora se quedó viuda en 1979 cuando Martín murió de un ataque de corazón. A la sorpresa de muchos se quedó en Idaho por el deseo que tenía Martin de criar los hijos en América. La dedicación que tenía a su marido fue evidente en muchas maneras incluyendo el hecho de que nunca tuvo deseo de casarse otra vez.

En los primeros años, limpio el banco en Kuna, el Idaho State Bank, mientras también trabajaba la granja de ovejas y la huerta para alimentar a su familia. Nunca se olvidó de la ayuda que tuvo de familia y amigos durante estos años difíciles. María empezó a coser y paso muchos años cosiendo en Brookover’s y New Generation. Fue conocida por sus jardines de flores y era una cocinera increíble. Era fuerte, ingeniosa y trabajadora, pero también tenía un humor gracioso. A la edad de 71, Yaya al fin fue abuela. Antes que empezaron en la escuela, ella siempre les cuidó a los tres nietos y les enseño muchas cosas incluyendo el español. El amor y respeto que sus nietos tenían para ella era abundante. Vivió los últimos días en la misma granja, en casa, disfrutando todos los sábados de cenas familiares y partidos de MUS; ganó los últimos dos partidos el sábado antes de morir inesperadamente, rodeada por su familia.

Antes de Teodora, fallecieron su esposo Martín, hijo Ramón, y hermano Eusebio. Sobreviven su hijo Luis Aseguinolaza, hija Maria Helena Aseguinolaza, hijo (político) Max Aaron Delgado y nietos Max, Amelia, y Micaela Delgado. También, sus hermanas Milagros y Ignacia Beltrán de Heredia Beovide y más familia en España. Invitamos a amigos a asistir su funeral el lunes, día 5 de abril en la iglesia Holy Apostles Catholic Church: Rosario y visita a las 10:00, Misa a las 11:00 y entierro en el cementerio Meridian Cemetery.
