Welles Mae Seifert 1932-2021
Our sweet mom, grandma, and great-grandma, Welles Mae Seifert earned her angel wings in the early
morning hours on November 16th as she painted a beautiful skyline on her way to heaven. Welles, 89 at
the time of her death, was born on December 13th 1932 to William and Mirtha Henderson in Caldwell,
Idaho. As a young girl she enjoyed traveling with her grandparents, spending time with Pansy and DADA
Lankford, hanging out with her mother and Aunt Melba Torrance, playing with her sister, Betty
Henderson Pursell and twin cousins Sandi Torrance VanHorn and Sherrill Torrance Gould Even though
the family was small they had a lot of fun times together.
Welles graduated from Boise High School and went on Boise State College in 1952 to study elementary
education. Her first teaching job was Ely, Nevada where she taught. There is where she met the love of
her life, husband, Jack Dean Seifert. To that union, two sons were born, Gary Dean and Kenneth William.
In 1956 Jack and Welles move to Emmett, Idaho where Welles taught school for over 25 years.
Highlights during her marriage included a trip across Europe with Jack in his wheelchair and all; the
family all helping build a beautiful cabin on Lake Cascade; and watching her boys succeed in school,
sports and scouts. After Jack retired, they took the road every fall and headed for warmer climate in
Mesa, Arizona. After Jack’s passing, Welles decided to go back to teaching in Emmett. She was a very a
dedicated and committed teacher who had high expectations for her students.
Welles was a woman with many talents and much creativity. Upon retirement from teaching, Welles
began dabbling in art. Through time she became an artist extraordinaire. Watercolor painting was her
passion. She painted many award winning pictures and some traveled the state in the Idaho Water
Color Society Showcase. She also made beautiful quilts and crocheted blankets for her family.
Welles enjoyed cooking. When going to the cabin, she also had gourmet dinners for her children and
grandchildren. At the cabin she enjoyed visiting friends and watching her grandchildren and great
grandchildren play each summer on the beach.
Welles was a model of determination, strength, courage and tenacity. She supported her husband
through his muscular dystrophy, overcame a brain tumor, took care of her mother, had a hip
replacement at 85 and painted a beautiful picture of her sister within 2 weeks of have a stroke that left
her weak on the right side.
Welles had many friends. She loved them all with all her heart. She was kind, gentle and sweet to
everyone she knew or met. She always put others before herself.
Welles was a religious person. Her love in the Lord was evident in everything she did. She read her bible
and prayed daily. She loved the members of her church and all through COVID enjoyed attended church
on-line.
Welles had 2 wishes before she died. This first was to live long enough to celebrate her 90th birthday.
She will surely have the best birthday party yet, in heaven. The second wish was to let all her coffee, art, teacher, church, and community and neighborhood friends, care takers, and family know how much she
loved them and appreciated them.
Welles was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, her parents, and her sister. Welles leaves behind
her sons Gary (Anne), Ken (Robin), 10 grandchildren, a great-great grandchild, cousins, nieces and
nephews, and many special friends.
Services will be as follows: On Friday, November 19th a viewing will be held from 6:00 to 7:30 with a
short service after. The viewing will be held a Summers Funeral Home (3629 E. Ustick Road, Meridian,
Idaho.) On November 20th at 10:30 short graveside burial service will take place at the Star Cemetery
(9259 W. Floating Feather Road, Star, Idaho.)
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Idaho Water Color Society
