Obituary of Voin Stewart Long

Heavenly Father brought Voin Stewart Long home on October 15, 2022, after 75 years as a son, husband, father, and grandfather. Born on May 13, 1947, he was baptized in 1955 and called to serve a mission to the eastern states from 1966-1968.

Voin was sealed to Janice Hodnett in the Oakland California temple for time and eternity on December 18, 1971. He has 6 children, Nissa, Kara, Shasta, Ben, Cherry, Anna, and 38 grandchildren. He strove to the end to fulfill his callings and covenants with God and live according to the advice of Benjamin Franklin, working on one flaw at a time.

Voin’s testimony of the restored church was strongly depicted in his day-to-day life, and even after suffering a major life and mind-altering car accident in 1998 Voin always tried to progressively become a better person- never losing faith that he could be healed- if not in this life then in the life to come. Since his own words are the best testament for who he truly is, and what he was truly striving to become, excerpts below are taken from Voin’s various journals.

 April, 1998

“I think I have another 30 years here in mortality. I cannot get to where I would have been, that I know, but I can retrain my system to be the kind of person- son- who will be worthy to stand righteously with my family before our Heavenly Father at that special time. How much I want to be a very special father to each of our children and their children. Being what I should be is so different from being what I wanted to be.”

April, 2004

“I am healthy and strong and very alert. In some manner my system is going to be restored to a useable condition. I know that I have some specific shortages and I am going to figure out just what to do and how to do the action(s) to put me into a true workable place.”

March, 2004

“I want to do and be more than I have been. Certainly there is more for me to do- I have not been kept here for this long to be a useless feller of a body. I can make contact with and influence many people as I live out the next half of my life.”

March, 2004

“There are many things that need to be done here in my family and for me and I do need the help from above. In order to progress on the path I must learn to talk with Heavenly Father and do so often. Blessings do come and as I receive them I want to record them here to be able to use the growth steps.”

April, 1998

“I want to do the will of the Lord. I want to know his mind, his works and his will for me.”
