My wife Lorna and I came to teach at San Diego State in 1981. During the interview process a few months earlier I was struck by the warm welcome and ongoing support of Carl, who was a member of the Search Committee. As a result of his wide and varied coaching expertise, he had a sound insight into my own area of expertise, biomechanics. His encouragement, ready charm and wit marked him as a future, valued colleague. Over the years Dee and Carl became good friends and trusted confidantes, and we shared some wonderful social events with the Bentons.
In 1988 Lorna and I were contracted to write a book, entitled "If it Hurts Don't Do It", the purpose of which was to encourage participation in moderate, injury-free exercise over the entire lifespan. The book included photographs of healthy appearing couples in various age ranges, who obviously enjoyed being physically active.
The search for a photogenic couple of about 65 was an absolute no brainer. Dee and Carl agreed to be included as great role models. The photograph taken a quarter of a century ago will always be the way we will remember Carl. A true Southern Gentleman whose life was enriched by the great love of his life, Dee.

Carl was a friend and supportive to me in our early days at San Diego State University. I was hired in 1967 to teach dance in the Women’s PE division. A strange situation and any encouragement I received from other faculty was greatly appreciated. Carl was in the Men’s PE, but in those days we all attended the same meetings. His sense of humor made the faculty meetings bearable yet he was always a professional and very respected among the faculty. He set a great example and if I am lucky enough to live as full a life as Carl, I will consider myself blessed.
My respects to family and friends. I am sure he will be missed.

Dear Benton Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Carl was a dear friend and colleague of ours in the Physical Education Department and later School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences. Since 1980, we so enjoyed Carl's and Dee's positive and joyful spirits. As the obituary read, Carl was the role model of a Southern gentleman. Always positive and helpful, Carl brought out the best in all of us.
Thank you for sharing your father and grandfather with us.

Dr. Benton was my teacher, friend and mentor at SDSU. He encouraged me to get into teaching and later to become an administrator. He would "drop" by the schools where I worked to say hi. He always had the right thing to say to me. There were difficult times for me but it was those times he seemed to magically appear. He could point me in a positive direction with just a few well chosen words. He was such a gentle soul, a true gentleman among gentlemen. It may seem trite to say I am the person I grew into being due, in a large part, to Dr. Benton but I believe he was the right person at the right time for me. I held him in the highest regard. I never could call him Carl, he was Dr. Benton. Your dad, grandfather and in-law was the most important person in my college and post college life. His lessons are with me today and always. Thank you for sharing him with all of us at SDSU.

The best teacher I ever had at any level. Many years after graduation we played some golf, a gentleman in every way. I often spoke of him to my students. He was a teaching idol.
