Obituary of Harold Elg

Harold Carl Elg was born on July 8, 1914, in Idaho Falls, ID to Elmer and Anna Elg. He passed away on November 14th, 2011 at his home surrounded by loved ones. Harold shared a happy childhood with his siblings: Lawrence, Louine, George, Betty and Iver. He graduated from the University of Idaho in 1938 with a degree in Forestry. He married the love of his life, Kathryne Seely in 1939, and their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in 1955. Harold worked for the Idaho Dept of Fish & Game's fish hatchery in American Falls until 1940, leaving to follow the construction trade in San Diego, CA and Jackson Hole, WY with his brothers and father. In 1941, he accepted a civil service job at the Terminal Island Naval Air Station in Long Beach, Ca. While working there, he enlisted in the US Coast Guard, and was called to active duty June 3, 1943. He went through officers training at New London, Ct, receiving his commission as an Ensign four months later. While in training, his oldest daughter Elaine was born in Idaho Falls, ID. Six weeks later, his wife and baby daughter joined him in New York City for eighteen months before he was sent overseas to the Philippines and Hawaii. Upon completion of his military service in 1946, Harold gained employment with the Soil Conservation Service in Shelley, ID., transferring to the Bureau of Land Management in Idaho Falls two years later. While in Idaho Falls, three children were added to the family, Harold Glen(1947), Marilyn(1949), and Susan(1953). Harold was transferred to Ely, NV in 1955, where their youngest child Steven(1956) was born. They were in Ely for 15 months before transferring to Carson City, NV, and then to Salmon, Id in 1960. He was transferred for the last time to Burley, Id in 1972, retiring from the BLM in 1974. Having a hard time staying busy, he took a job as Minidoka County weed superintendant in 1975 and finally retired for good in 1988 at the age of 74. In 1989, he and Kathryne returned to Salmon for two years before moving to Rexburg in 1991, then to Eagle in 2000. Harold was preceded in death by his daughter, Elaine Waldal. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Kathryne, and his children: Harold Glen (Charlene) Elg of Boise; Marilyn (Brett) Spackman of Bellingham, WA; Susan (Bob) Roth of Salmon, ID; Steven (Marie) Elg of Clive, IA, 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; his sister, Betty Gillings, brother, Iver (Joy) Elg and numerous nieces and nephews. Harold will be remembered forever with love and gratitude for being a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He always lived his life by being an excellent example for truthfulness, honesty, gratitude, kindness, responsibility, and a strong work ethic. He was an avid reader and his knowledge and wisdom were truly remarkable. His satisfaction came from giving happiness to others. He had an everlasting heartfelt sincerity in all he did in life. Services are under the direction of Summers Funeral Home and will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 18th at the LDS Church, 2090 N.Eagle Rd., Eagle, ID. A viewing will beheld from 7-9 pm on Thursday, November 17th at Summers Funeral Chapel, 3629 E Ustick Rd, Meridian. Interment will be at Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery in Idaho Falls, ID on Saturday, November 19th at 2 p.m.
