Obituary of John Anduiza

John C. Anduiza, 96, of Boise, Idaho, died October 14, 2011, in Boise. He was born at the Anduiza Basque boarding house on Grove Street on Sept. 5, 1915, the youngest son of Juan C. and Juana (Gabiola) Anduiza. He graduated from Boise High School and attended Boise Junior College, Loyola Marymount, and graduated from the University of Portland with a B.A. degree in business. He married Mary Yrazabal on July 17, 1941, in Boise. They were married for 70 years. He was in the service in 1941. Subsequently, he worked for 9th Service Command at Gowen Field as an auditor and the Office of Defense Transportations as an analyst. He started to work for the Internal Revenue Service in January 1945 as an auditor and retired June 1973 as chief of administration. John was an active sportsman. He played baseball, basketball, handball, Basque pelota, and bowled. He played baseball for the Boise Senators in 1937 and 1938 and for Ontario, Oregon, in 1939 in the Idaho-Oregon League. He was also a member of the University of Portland baseball team. John became an avid golfer after he retired in 1973 and golfed well into his 90s in the Annual Euzkaldunak Benefit Golf Tournament each July. He was a member of Euzkaldunak and the Basque Museum and Cultural Center. John was among the first parishioners of Sacred Heart Church, which he and Mary attended for over 55 years. Survivors include his beloved wife Mary, a daughter JoAnn and her husband Leonard Workman of Longview, Washington, a granddaughter Elaine Workman and a grandson Kevin Workman both of Beaverton, Oregon, a brother-in-law Joe and sister-in-law Josephine Yrazabal of Boise and several nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son Richard, three brothers and a sister—Pete, Julio, Manual and Matilda. Vigil and Rosary will be held Tuesday evening, October 18, at 7:00 p.m. at Summers Ustick Chapel, 3629 E. Ustick Road, Meridian, Idaho. A public viewing will be held for two hours prior to the start of the Vigil and Rosary Services at the funeral home. Requiem Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, October 19, at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 811 So. Latah, Boise. Arrangements are under the direction of Summers Funeral Homes. The family wishes to thank the caring staffs at Willow Park, Hearts for Hospice, and Dr. Mark Johnson and his nurse Kathy for their compassionate care and support. Memorials may be made to Euzkaldunak, Inc., the Basque Museum and Cultural Center, Sacred Heart Church or to a charity of choice.
