Don "Deke" Thoen posted a condolence

I first met Don as a 12 year old newly diagnosed diabetic in 1982. He convinced me to join Camp Hodia and it was always the highlight of summer vacation. Although I had not spoken with Don in many years, my thoughts are frequently about him while hiking the back country, as he also introduced me to that wonderful activity during the Hodia Wilderness Camp.
I hope I can speak for the thousands of kids he helped throughout his life when saying he will be greatly missed. My thoughts will continue about Don and I offer my most sincere condolances.

Some people are willing to help you.
Some have the skills you need.
Don had both and offered them freely to us over the last 25 years. He changed the lives of our families for the better many times and in many ways.

I have known Don as a member of the St. luke's family for 35 years now. He took care of my niece who was one of his first Camp Hodia kids and even tho she now is probably in her early 40's there hasnt been a day when Don has passed me in the halls at the hospital when he hasnt stopped and askd me "how is Rene doing?" Don, my friend, your absence will leave a big void in the halls of St. Lukes but yur legacy will live on in the hearts of all those of us whose lives you have touched FOREVER.

Don took care of our son, when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at16 years old. My husband and I sat in his training classes at St Luke's and listened while Don taught us about diabetes. He was wonderful and was instrumental in getting our son to the right doctor. A few days before Don's death, our son and daughter, who live in Phoenix, were having a conversation regarding whether Nicole (who was just put on insulin) prepped her pen. Tim told her that he learned to prep his pen from Don when he was 16 and he is now almost 30. He learned from a great teacher and will pass what he learned on to her.
He was a wonderful person. Always remembered us and always asked about Tim and our family.
Our hearts and prayers go out to your family.
