Obituary of Ysidora Regina Mendieta Smith

Ysidora “Dora” Regina Mendieta Smith of Boise, Idaho, passed away on March 31, 2018.

Dora was born on November 27, 1925, in Boise to Pedro and Felisa Mendieta.  Her brother, Richard and her sister, Marie both preceded her in death.  She grew up in Boise and graduated from Boise High School in 1945.

Dora chose nursing as a profession and attended nursing school at Sacred Heart Hospital, which was run by Gonzaga University.  After graduating in 1948, she went to work at St. Luke’s Hospital in the nursery caring for newborn babies.

In 1955 Dora joined the U. S. Air Force, retiring with the rank of Major.  She signed up for two years and stayed for twenty.  She always said the best thing about being in the Air Force was meeting and marrying her husband, Ross A Smith on March 12, 1965.  While in the Air Force they were stationed in bases in Georgia, California, and North Dakota, in the U. S., and in Italy and Spain in Europe.

They both retired in 1975, at the Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho, after which they returned to Boise to care for Dora’s parents until their deaths.  They loved to travel the world and visited many places such as Egypt, Germany, and China.  Sadly, Ross passed away on January 24, 1997.

Dora was a very generous person.  She spent many hours volunteering at both the VA and St. Luke’s Hospitals.

Dora is survived by two nieces who reside in Boise, and two nephews and two nieces who live in Seattle, Washington.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 11am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 2612 W State Street, Boise, Idaho 83702.
